Vegas Weekender: Top off summer with a Vegas vacation

There are only a few weeks of summer left, so make the most of it with a Vegas vacation. From the fourth annual Midsummer Night’s Dream party, which is guaranteed to go into the wee hours of the morning, to Nathan Burton, a family-friendly afternoon show, it’s all happening this weekend in Vegas.

A big event this weekend is the Midsummer Night’s Dream party at the Palms Pool & Bungalows. Jenny McCarthy will host the over-the-top lingerie party this Saturday, Aug. 14. A costume or a mask is required for admission and doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets start at $140.

If you’ve ever thought your pole dancing skills were, well, above average, then here’s your chance to cash in. On Saturday, Aug. 14, sign up to compete in Queen of the Pole, a pole dancing competition that could earn you a $1,000 prize, not to mention bragging rights. Second and third place winners take home cash prizes of $200 and $100, respectively. The competition takes place at Crown Nightclub in the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Doors open at 10:30 p.m.

Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina at Planet Hollywood will rock out every Friday and Saturday night in August, with live classic rock beginning at 9:30 p.m. Rock Daddy will perform Aug. 13 and Acoustic Soul takes the stage Aug. 14. The rockin’ fiesta continues on Sunday with a mariachi brunch featuring a live mariachi band from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and live Rock Star Karaoke beginning at 9 p.m.

Head to Rain nightclub at the Palms for Z-Trip’s Revolution, A Party for the People, featuring world-renowned musical talent DJ Z-Trip. This Friday, Aug. 13 features Fabolous. Cover is $30 per person and the party starts at 11 p.m.


Nathan Burton provides family-friendly entertainment at the Flamingo Showroom. His afternoon show offers unique magic, showgirls, comedy and a variety of illusions that will leave you saying “wow!” Tickets start at $21.57 for children and $38.57 for adults. Show times are Aug. 12, 13 and 15 at 4 p.m.

Primus takes over The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Saturday, Aug. 14. The alternative rock band is playing new music as well as songs from their hit album “Antipop,” released in 1999. Primus takes the stage at midnight. Tickets start at $35.

Reggae never sounded so smooth than with recording artist Shaggy. The Palms Pool & Bungalows will feature a special poolside performance with “Mr. Boombastic” himself on Thursday, Aug. 12. Shaggy has several successful albums including “Intoxication” and “Pure Pleasure.” Tickets for the 9 p.m. show start at $30.

If you like The Beatles, get involved with “Beatle Mania!” The show brings to life Paul, Ringo, George and John this Wednesday, Aug. 11 at the Las Vegas Hilton. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $26.85.

Academy Award-winning artists Three 6 Mafia will be at The Theatre for Performing Arts at Planet Hollywood on Friday, Aug. 13. The group will be joined by Gorilla Zoe, Ya Boy and Splitbreed on the “Bud Light 21 Tour with KOI-BOI.” The Theatre for Performing Arts will be transformed into a hip-hop haven at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $40.

Funny man Tim Allen will be at the Terry Fator Theatre in the Mirage on Aug. 13. Best known for playing Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor on “Home Improvement,” Allen makes his way to Las Vegas at 10 p.m. Tickets start at $72.40.

Comedian Bill Engvall appears at Treasure Island for some laugh-out-loud humor. Engvall is most famous for being a part of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Engvall will take the stage Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $61.40.


Chef Kerry Simon offers delicious lunches in 30 minutes at his restaurant and lounge at Palms Place. You can enjoy the eye candy lounging poolside and the real candy in Simon’s junk food platter. But if you’re short on time, the 30-minute meals are the way to go. Choose from three different meals that include a main item like burgers or sushi, a side item like fries or creamy tomato soup and a dessert like chocolate chip cookies or a vanilla milkshake. Simon is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, daily.
