Vegas Weekender: Tiaras, treats and trippy beats

Whether you’re here to watch the annual Miss America pageant, eat your heart out at one of Vegas’ newest restaurants or dance all night to a variety of DJs, Vegas is the place to be.

If you’re here a little earlyy before the weekend, Gilley’s Saloon and Dance Hall at TI hosts a bikini mud wrestling event on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The weekly event will feature bikini-clad beauties wrestling up to four rounds, each with three matches. The winner of each round advances and the overall winner will receive $500. The fun begins at 11 p.m.

Located inside the Hard Rock Hotel, The Joint hosts the 5th Annual World Mixed Martial Arts Awards on Friday, Jan. 11. The ceremony begins 7:30 p.m.

The 2013 Miss America pageant is Saturday, Jan. 12 at Planet Hollywood casino. Judges include Cheryl Burke (pictured right) from ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” Daymond John, star ABC’s “Shark Tank” and Katie Stam Irk, Miss America 2009, to name a few. Competition starts at 8 p.m.

“King of the Mundane” Steven Wright brings his deadpan humor to the Orleans Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan. 12. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Also performing Jan. 11-12 is funnyman Daniel Tosh at The Mirage. Show starts at 10 p.m.

Blues legend Gregg Allman performs his classics at The Palms on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m.

The Used rocks out at Mandalay Bay’s House of Blues Friday, Jan. 11. Other bands include We Came as Romans, Crown The Empire and Mindflow. The show kicks off at 5 p.m.

Master magician David Copperfield takes the stage at MGM Grand now through Wednesday, Jan. 16. Show times are 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. nightly, with a special Saturday matinee show at 4 p.m.

Down, Warbeast and Haarp perform at the Hard Rock Café on the Strip on Tuesday, Jan. 15.


Grammy Award-winning rapper Nelly hosts at Haze at Aria Thursday, Jan. 10.  DJ Kurch takes over the turntables on Friday, Jan. 11.

Ludacris hosts Tao’s  Soul Headphones Party, Thursday, Jan. 10.

R&B sensation Keri Hilson performs live at The Bank at Bellagio on Friday, Jan. 11. Fans of The Game can see him on Sunday, Jan. 13.

Tryst at Wynn presents LA Riots on Thursday, Jan. 10. Jermaine Dupri performs his DJ set on Saturday, Jan. 12.

XS at Encore showcases hot acts this weekend including Nero and Warren Peace (Friday, Jan. 11); Afrojack and Warren Peace (Saturday, Jan. 12); Funkagenda and Warren Peace (Sunday, Jan. 13) and Diplo and Dave Fogg (Monday, Jan. 14).

Beats By Dre presents Zedd with special guest Rick Ross at Marquee at The Cosmopolitan on Thursday, Jan. 10. Other acts include Dash Berlin (Friday, Jan. 11); Krewella with Bassjackers (Saturday, Jan. 12) and Joachim Garraud (Monday, Jan. 14).

Body English at the Hard Rock Hotel hosts Adam Beyer, Saturday, Jan 12 and Cut Chemist, Sunday, Jan. 13.

Lavo at the Palazzo features the top DJs from across the world competing for the Red Bull Thr3style National Champion title. Competing DJs are given 15 minutes and the challenge to play three different genres of music. Winners advance to the next step on the road to the world finals in December.

Competing DJs include Las Vegas locals Ikon, Mark Stylz, DJ Karma, DJ C-L-A and DJ scene. The event will be hosted by Las Vegas local, DJ Hollywood. The event is Tuesday, Jan. 15. Doors open at 10 p.m.


If you’re all about saving up your money for shopping and partying the night away, Ranch House Kitchen at Town Square hosts “Dirtbag Tuesdays” and a $5 menu. From 9 p.m. – midnight daily, enjoy 50 cent featured domestic drafts, in addition to a $5 happy hour and late-night food menu.

Priced at $5 each, enjoy mouth-watering selections like burgers, chicken sandwiches, brisket grinders, pizza, chicken wings, and potato skins. This menu is available daily from 3 – 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. – midnight.

If you haven’t been to Vegas within the past couple of months, there are a handful of new restaurants to check out. These include Little Richie’s Chicago-Style Beef & Dogs at TI, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on Harmon Avenue (next to Planet Hollywood) and two Gordan Ramsay establishments – Gordon Ramsey Pub & Grill inside Caesars Palace and Gordon Ramsay BurGR at Planet Hollywood.  Or, venture off the Strip and try the tasty tapas at the newly-opened Nosh & Swig, located on 3650 E. Flamingo Road (Suite 5), just 10-15 minutes away.


Most folks take their Vegas jackpot winnings back home, but my dad decided to stay here instead. That’s how I left Seattle almost 20 years ago. I moved from greenery and rainy days to hot summers, palm trees and desert. As much as I love my hometown, I decided to stick around Vegas. This city just has so much to offer. You don’t even have to be a gambler, bar hopper or an all-night partier. I love Vegas for its awesome vegan-friendly spots, concerts, swanky hotel suites and spas so big, they’re like castles. The pool scene is not too shabby either, which is why I love taking stay-cations. Besides living it up -- Vegas style -- I’m hanging out with my handsome hubby, adorable baby girl, two cats and super-fluffy Shih-Tzu. I’m also a huge fan of '90s music, shows and movies.
