The Real Cupcakes of Las Vegas

How can you not love cupcakes? They’re cute, they’re petite and they’re just the perfect size to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Cupcakes can also be addicting with wordplay. My friends and I started a game where we replace the word “cupcake” in popular TV show titles. Funny titles included “How I Met Your Cupcake,” “All  My Cupcakes,” “General Cupcake” and “My So-Called Cupcake,” to name a few.  Speaking of TV shows, I’m a huge fan of the “The Cupcake Wars” and was stoked when vegan chef, Chloe Coscarelli won for her gingerbread nutmeg spice cupcakes. So when I first heard about a live cupcake bake-off in town, I was thrilled.

Presented by Gigi’s Cupcakes, on Sunday, August 19, 100 bakers will compete inside the ballroom at Suncoast hotel from noon to 3 p.m. The winner will be titled “Best Cupcake Baker in Las Vegas” and receive $1,500. The winning cupcake will be featured in both Gigi’s Cupcake locations in Las Vegas. Participants are eligible to win a portion of $2,500 in cash prizes.

Even if you’re not participating in the bake-off, you’ll have the chance to indulge in cupcakes and beverages. Guests 21 and older have cocktail options. The event also includes flair bartenders and speed decorating demonstrations.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger. A portion of the proceeds go to charity. It’s a win-win situation: You’ll make your taste buds happy, all while helping a good cause. Sounds like a sweet deal.

Most folks take their Vegas jackpot winnings back home, but my dad decided to stay here instead. That’s how I left Seattle almost 20 years ago. I moved from greenery and rainy days to hot summers, palm trees and desert. As much as I love my hometown, I decided to stick around Vegas. This city just has so much to offer. You don’t even have to be a gambler, bar hopper or an all-night partier. I love Vegas for its awesome vegan-friendly spots, concerts, swanky hotel suites and spas so big, they’re like castles. The pool scene is not too shabby either, which is why I love taking stay-cations. Besides living it up -- Vegas style -- I’m hanging out with my handsome hubby, adorable baby girl, two cats and super-fluffy Shih-Tzu. I’m also a huge fan of '90s music, shows and movies.
