Rugby teams, fans take over Vegas for USA Sevens Tournament

Teams from around the world will converge on Las Vegas for the USA Sevens Rugby Week and Tournament at Sam Boyd Stadium Jan. 21 – 26. Rugby fans can catch all of the exciting action of the matches as well as an array of special events and parties around town during the week.

The annual USA Sevens international rugby tournament is the premier rugby event in North America as well as the fourth event out of nine in the HSBC Sevens World Series. USA Sevens is the only North American stop in the series. Fans will see 16 international rugby sevens teams play 45 matches during a three-day competition in an attempt to gain points in the Sevens World Series standings.

Played on the same size field as traditional 15-player rugby, rugby sevens is played with just seven players per team. Matches have seven-minute halves with two-minute intervals for pool and knock-out matches.

The tournament week is also the only opportunity for U.S. fans to see future rugby sevens Olympians in person as the players prepare for the 2016 summer games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The events will kick off with team autograph sessions Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22 at various locations on the Las Vegas Strip. The sessions will give fans the chance to interact with their favorite players and receive autographs while enjoying special giveaways and dining promotions.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino will hold a pep rally for the USA Eagles rugby sevens team as they prepare to compete. The festivities start at 10:45 a.m. with music on the plaza near PBR Rock Bar & Grill. At 11 a.m., USA Sevens cheerleaders will kick off the pep rally. Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will also be in attendance to welcome the USA Eagles, whose members will be introduced to fans by Head Coach Matt Hawkins. Guests can enjoy food and drink specials following the rally at PBR Rock Bar & Grill. Everyone in attendance will be given American flags to show their support for the USA Eagles.

Opening ceremonies for the USA Sevens tournament will be held January 23 at the Fremont Street Experience from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Fans are encouraged to dress in over-the-top costumes, a rugby tradition, as USA Sevens Rugby officially kicks off the tournament with  DJ performances and a block party.

The rugby matches at Sam Boyd Stadium run Jan. 24 – 26. Rugby Sevens Teams competing (tentative) are Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Portugal, Samoa, Scotland, Spain, Uruguay, United States and Wales.

Tournament Play is scheduled for the following dates and times:

It’s not that warm in Minnesota. I know this from spending half my life freezing in the northern part of the state. So 20 years ago, I decided to thaw out and traded in scarves and mittens for tank tops and flip-flops (Take that, polar vortex!). I swapped snow for 300 days of sun a year. I may not have been born here, but there are hotels that haven’t lasted in Vegas as long as I have. The Sands, Hacienda, Aladdin, Desert Inn and the Stardust too. I've been to my fair share of implosion parties. (Yeah, that’s a thing.) As a writer for, I've applauded hundreds of shows, explored every major hotel in town and raised a few glasses at most of the city's bars and clubs. Now I'm the resident foodie here. I write about all things dining — from $3.99 shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate to the finest sushi at Nobu, and everything in between.
