Jammin’ with Jukari

Jukari Fit to Flex makes you sweat by incorporating stretches and cardio in a unique, energetic way. Bellagio is the only hotel in Las Vegas featuring this new, innovative workout.

Last week I had a chance to jam with Jukari — and no, I’m not talking about my girl from back in the day.

Jukari, which means “to play,” is a fun way to get your groove on, stretch and break a sweat — all at the same time. Cirque du Soleil and Reebok teamed up to create Jukari Fit to Flex, an innovative new workout that’ll keep be sure to keep you on your toes.

Drawing inspiration from strong, controlled movements performed by Cirque du Soleil dancers, this cardio-infused program available at The Spa Bellagio works to develop long, lean muscles and powerful core strength. Taught by certified instructors, these classes are designed to help enhance flexibility, muscle tone and coordination, all while keeping your heart rate up at the same time.

Think Pilates and aerobics with a bit more pizzazz.

I came in not knowing what to expect. As we entered the air-conditioned fitness room, the first thing I noticed was the refreshing mint aroma. I wish my gym smelled this lovely. Our instructor had us grab an elastic band (the kind you see used in Pilates floorwork  exercises) and started us off with some basic stretches. This is easy-peasy! I thought to myself. But little did I know I’d be sweating my buns off only minutes later.

The moves are really fun. Our energetic instructor had us do the Michael Jackson double-tiptoe/hip thrust to loosen us up, a flamingo leg pose for balance, a lasso move for cardio and much more. Even though I was definitely feeling the burn, I couldn’t believe how much fun I was having by working out. I caught myself laughing at some of the moves, especially when we whipped the band to the ground. Fierce! Other times I felt like I was a ribbon dancer. What makes this class even more entertaining is that there are mirrors everywhere so you can see all your moves. And unlike your traditional stretching poses, here you get to stretch and move around at the same time.

I left feeling rejuvenated and full of energy. If I had a chance to do this on a daily basis, I’d be in the best shape ever. For $40, you can take this 50-minute class, enjoy the hot and cold dipping pools in the wet spa/lounge area, complimentary refreshments and access to the spa’s fitness center.

This is the only spa in Las Vegas that offers Jukari Fit to Flex. And since it’ll stay warm here for the next three months, you have plenty of time to try this and get in tip-top shape. Now take that elastic band of yours and whip it good!

Most folks take their Vegas jackpot winnings back home, but my dad decided to stay here instead. That’s how I left Seattle almost 20 years ago. I moved from greenery and rainy days to hot summers, palm trees and desert. As much as I love my hometown, I decided to stick around Vegas. This city just has so much to offer. You don’t even have to be a gambler, bar hopper or an all-night partier. I love Vegas for its awesome vegan-friendly spots, concerts, swanky hotel suites and spas so big, they’re like castles. The pool scene is not too shabby either, which is why I love taking stay-cations. Besides living it up -- Vegas style -- I’m hanging out with my handsome hubby, adorable baby girl, two cats and super-fluffy Shih-Tzu. I’m also a huge fan of '90s music, shows and movies.
