Thinking of a way to wow Dad this Father’s Day? Instead of throwing another barbecue or taking him to the park to shoot some hoops, why not plan a quick trip to Las Vegas? Featuring everything from out-of-this-world indoor kart racing to “manly” lunch specials, Las Vegas is your one-stop destination for a weekend with Dad.
If Dad’s a sports fan, perhaps you can make it to town in time to catch the red carpet for the NHL Awards starting at 3:15 p.m. today at the entrance to the Palms Las Vegas. For some serious action, the Palms will also host the UFC fight with Diego Sanchez vs. Clay Guida on Saturday. Dad may also want to take a shot at perusing the basketball memorabilia at Hoop Hall Experience at Planet Hollywood.
From race car driving and monstrous meals to a unique list of headliners, Dad will thank you for taking him to Vegas this Father’s Day weekend.
The way to your dad’s heart: his stomach, of course!
One of the best ways to show Dad you care is by taking him out for a real meal. Now through June 30, Dad can eat for free at Pampas Brazilian Grille inside Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops. Each Brazilian-inspired selection comes with choice of rice, cheese bread, black bean stew, fried banana or Brazilian pretzels. Call (702) 737-4747 for a free $40 gift certificate.
On Sunday, bring Dad to Springs Café at the Springs Preserve for barbecue accompanied by live Latin jazz and salsa music. The Springs Café by Wolfgang Puck offers items including corned beef and poached eggs Benedict, barbecue beef short ribs, grilled London broiled steak with spicy pepper glaze and Cajun shrimp. Desserts include summer favorites like apple pie, peach cobbler and carrot cake. Tickets are $29.95 for adults and $12.50 for children. Call (702) 822-7786.
At Hash House A Go Go, Dad will feel like a king with out-of-this-world brunch specials like the Papi Chulo Hash: Crispy potatoes, pork tenderloin in chipotle adobo, corn, tomato, jalapeños, cilantro, avocado and cheese, crowned with two eggs and served with a fresh tortilla or Alfonso’s Lunchbox, a one-and-a-half pound all-beef hot dog topped with gourmet chorizo, tomato, cheddar cheese and sliced jalapeños served with potato salad and a cold Tecate beer. Dad can also opt for peanut butter and banana pancakes with whipped cream. Ranging from $8.25 to $20.95, the brunch menu is offered on Sunday from 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Limited reservation times are available. Call (702) 804-4646.
Sit back, relax and enjoy a show with dad
If Dad is a Motown fan, you’re in luck with Imperial Palace’s newest show, “Smokey Robinson Presents Australia’s Human Nature – The Ultimate Adventure In Motown.” The show features the dynamic harmonies of Toby Allen, Phil Burton and brothers Andrew and Michael Tierney singing your all-time favorites such as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “My Girl.” Trust us when we say these Aussies have soul.
To keep that Motown spirit alive, Jerry’s Nugget Casino offers Motown Fridays. The cover charge is $5 and you can enjoy music from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m.
If you’re ready to laugh out loud with Dad, Jay Leno will be at the Mirage this Friday and Saturday and Larry King will be at Encore on Friday. Regular Vegas funny acts include George Wallace, Wayne Brady, Terry Fator and Louie Anderson.
Other headliners include Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers (Friday at Sunset Station), Wilco (Friday at Hard Rock Hotel), Paul Williams (Friday and Saturday at South Point), En Vogue (Saturday at the Silverton), MC Hammer, Tone Loc and Young MC (Saturday at Thomas & Mack Center) and Loretta Lynn (Saturday at Texas Station.)
If you’re looking for something free to do, head over to Red Rock Resort and Casino and enjoy the drum circle event, Rhythm of the Night, which takes place every Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the hotel’s pool. If Dad wants to show off his musical skills, bongo rental is available.
Fulfill dad’s need for speed on Father’s Day
Craving that adrenaline rush? Surprise Dad with a trip to Pole Position Raceway.
Dad will enjoy the state-of-the-art facility, which features indoor race karts zooming faster than any of their kind in the country. These bad boys are 18-horsepower and are capable of going 45 miles per hour.
Pole Position Raceway’s 60,000-square-foot facility features a unique quarter-mile European-style track, which was designed by professional race car drivers. You and Dad will race through long straightaways, hairpin turns and other unique elements.
Before heading out on the track, drivers get to choose a racing name — this name shows up on the big screen above the track. At the end of each race, each driver will receive a scorecard, which includes details like lap time and position in race along with overall race stats.
Pole Position Raceway opens at 11 a.m. daily. Buy a two-race ticket for $55 or a three-race ticket for $80. Call (702) 227-7723 for more details.
