Rock of Ages rocks the Rio

I wanna rock!

… and make sure that all of the rad ’80s songs that are currently stuck in our heads after checking out Rock of Ages at the Rio last night will stay there to get us through the weekend.

The show has moved from the Venetian to the Rio and let us be the first to tell you that the Rio’s intimate venue (just over 430 seats) made this production 100 times better.

The ’80s-centric musical is set in the fictional Bourbon Room on L.A.’s infamous Sunset Strip and chronicles the love story of Drew, a boy from South Detroit, and Sherrie, a small-town girl, who are both in L.A. to chase their dreams of fame (cue songs).

While we have seen this show during its time at the Venetian, as soon as the house lights went down and the spotlights turned on at the Rio, we knew that Vegas’ Rock of Ages had found its (hopefully) permanent home. This feels like the real Bourbon Room.

The intimacy of the smaller showroom not only allows for more audience involvement it also gives everyone a chance to really see and appreciate the subtle jokes found within the actors’ facial expressions and hear their vocal talents, which were previously consumed by that vastness of the cavernous Venetian showroom.

Powering the whole show is a string of ’80s rock anthems (more than 30) including “Sister Christian,” “We Built This City,” “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “I Wanna Know What Love Is,” “Any Way You Want it,” “I Wanna Rock,” “Oh Sherrie,” “Here I Go Again,” “Don’t Stop Believin'” and many, many more.

Although Rock of Ages is billed as a musical — it was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical — with its new location, Rock of Ages is now a rock concert with the requisite powerhouse lead singers, an onstage amazing band and loads of concert memorabilia being hawked outside the theater. Just like any self-respecting rock fans, the audience at Rock of Ages sings along with the songs and dances through the finale. It’s a blast.

With rocking music, a dynamite cast, a killer set and wardrobe design and the perfect venue, Rock of Ages is staying at the top of our must-see Vegas show list.

Trading one desert for another, I moved to Las Vegas from Arizona nearly three years ago. It was something about the sparkling lights and the all-encompassing entertainment factor that persuaded me to swap cacti for casinos and dry heat for well…even drier heat. And while I do love a good show, I will always keep true to my country girl ways seeing that I am an absolute sucker for a good country concert and will always indulge the opportunity to go out country dancing! But in a city that undoubtedly has some of the world’s best cuisine, a wild assortment of endless experiences, and of course phenomenal shows, Vegas certainly has that unparalleled good time vibe that can make a city slicker out of just about anyone… including myself!
