Riviera Comedy Club contest will decide next comic headliner on Saturday

The Riviera Comedy Club is still searching for its next star comic headliner, but after four semifinal rounds, the judges in the contest are ready to wipe the tears of laughter from their eyes, take a few deep breaths and choose a winner.

The four finalists — Mike Merrill from Panorama City, Calif.; Matthew Broome from Scottsdale, Ariz.; Jared Stern from Washington, D.C. and Maria Walsh from Long Island, N.Y. — will compete this weekend to earn one week headlining at the iconic venue.

“These four finalists have proven to be hilarious and energetic and we would be honored to have any of them in the spotlight at the Riviera Comedy Club,” Mark Massimino, director of entertainment at the Riviera, said in a statement.

Contestants submitted videos of their work and the finalists were chosen from among 226 hopefuls.

“They have impressed our panel of judges … so each of these comics have earned the right to compete in the finals,” Massimino stated.

The judging panel includes “America’s Got Talent” season 7 runner-up Mark Cotter and the club’s booking staff.

The contest finale is free and open to the public. The comics will take the stage Saturday at 10 p.m. at the Riviera Comedy Club.
