Mamma Mia! returning to Las Vegas in spring 2014

If you missed Mamma Mia! the first time it was around, you’re in luck. Five years after closing, the hit Broadway musical is returning to the Las Vegas Strip.

Mamma Mia! is scheduled to open in a recently renovated theater at Tropicana Las Vegas this coming spring, though no date has been set. The show ran for six years at Mandalay Bay before closing in 2009. During its first run, the musical gave more than 2,200 performances to 2 million-plus people.

Mamma Mia! is an amusing tale of family and friendship that unfolds on a tiny Greek island as the mother of a young bride-to-be brings three men to the wedding to figure out which one is her daughter’s father.

“It’s so exciting that Mamma Mia! is returning to fabulous Las Vegas, ” creator and producer Judy Craymer said. “We are so thrilled to be invited to the New Tropicana. It is the perfect hotel for us to bring the original show back to the Strip amongst the glamour and excitement of this legendary playground.”

On Broadway, Mamma Mia! has enjoyed a run of 12 years – one of only five shows to remain open more than 10 years. Worldwide, it has been seen by more than 54 million people in 38 productions in over 400 cities and in 14 languages.

Based on the songs by Swedish pop sensations, ABBA, the musical’s music and lyrics are by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Songs include “Money, Money, Money,” “Dancing Queen” and “The Winner Takes It All.”
