Journey opens mini-residency at Hard Rock Hotel

The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino was in full rock star mode last night as iconic rock band Journey kicked off their nine-show Las Vegas residency.

Immediately bringing the packed house to their feet when they opened their 19-song set with their famed “Any Way You Want It,” the entertainers sounded as good as ever.

We weren’t kidding about the lasers. It was awesome.

And while there have been some slight changes in the band over the years (ahem… no more Steve Perry) Journey’s current lead singer, Arnel Pineda, has officially confirmed that he can hold his own and demand any audience’s attention with his spot-on vocals. The rest of the band is composed of Neal Schon (lead guitar and backing vocals), Jonathan Cain (keyboards and backing vocals), co-founder Ross Valory (bass and backing vocals) and Deen Castronovo (drums, percussion and backing vocals), and these rockers have never lost the spirit that initially made Journey the legendary band that it remains today.

“They sound just like they used to,” said one concert-goer post show. And while they may still sound like the Journey we have always known and loved, let’s be honest, their performance was different than back in the day… and it freakin’ rocked.

Performing among a backdrop of seven massive digital screens with awesome visuals, the band progressed through fan favorites including “Stone in Love,” “Lights” and “Don’t Stop Believin’,” adding an extra dose of awesome with dozens of colored spotlights, strobes and a surprise confetti blowout that was pretty cool to experience… Ladies and gents, we are not in the ’80s anymore.

And while this may be true, it is clear that since the band got their start all those years ago, their loyal following is supporting them to this day.

…nor were we kidding about the confetti blowout either.

In addition to their 25 gold and platinum albums, Journey has a greatest hits album that is certified 15 times platinum, which brought the band into the elite club of diamond-certified album holders. Also, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, Journey has sold 47 million albums in the U.S., making them the 28th best-selling band…yeah, it’s kind of a big deal.

Other hits they play during their Las Vegas show include “Mother, Father,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Separate Ways” and “Open Arms” as well as songs from their mega-successful records “Escape,” “Raised on the Radio” and “Trial by Fire.”

An excellent evening of classic entertainment with modern-day technology, this high-energy rock concert is definitely one to catch while they are in Vegas. With only eight more shows to go, don’t miss your chance to rock out with Journey at The Joint for what could be their best Vegas concert run yet.

Trading one desert for another, I moved to Las Vegas from Arizona nearly three years ago. It was something about the sparkling lights and the all-encompassing entertainment factor that persuaded me to swap cacti for casinos and dry heat for well…even drier heat. And while I do love a good show, I will always keep true to my country girl ways seeing that I am an absolute sucker for a good country concert and will always indulge the opportunity to go out country dancing! But in a city that undoubtedly has some of the world’s best cuisine, a wild assortment of endless experiences, and of course phenomenal shows, Vegas certainly has that unparalleled good time vibe that can make a city slicker out of just about anyone… including myself!
