Is Kung Fu Panda the Next Lion King?

Dreamworks SKG announced today that it would be working in collaboration with Franco Dragone to create a live show based on its animated hit “Kung Fu Panda.”

Las Vegas is quite familiar with Dragone’s work. He created and directed a number of landmark Las Vegas shows that helped changed the way Sin City thinks about entertainment including “Mystère,” “O,Celine Dion’s “A New Day …” and “Le Rêve.

Dragone is used to working with highly creative teams. His Las Vegas shows were done in cooperation with talented groups  like Cirque du Soleil for “Mystère” and “O;” Celine Dion, Mia Michaels and others for “A New Day,” and Steve Wynn for “Le Rêve.”

“We expect that the combination of the Franco Dragone Entertainment Group and DreamWorks Animation will result in a totally new and inventive live entertainment experience for family audiences,” said DreamWorks Animation Chief Operating Officer Ann Daly.

The show is targeted to begin touring in 2011 to coincide with the June opening of the “Kung Fu Panda” sequel.

The question remains, will it visit Las Vegas on its tour? With the combination of Franco Dragone and Dreamworks, it appears to be the perfect Las Vegas match. Let’s hope it doesn’t take as long as “Lion King” did (12 years) to reach Vegas.

I'm one of a rare breed of folks, a native Las Vegan. That's Las Vegan, not Vegan. Being born in Las Vegas has endowed me with crazy Vegas skills - must be all the exposure to neon. I'm a human casino GPS, celebrity locator (You never know who you'll meet in a casino elevator, right Richard Branson?) and tip calculator. My mom taught me probability and statistics with decommissioned casino dice. When I walk through a hotel, tourists think I work there. Maybe it's my smile, my purposeful walk or my friendly answers. Maybe it's just the black suit. But whatever the reason, Vegas.com gives me the chance to exercise my Vegas super powers every day. Now if I could just predict when Megabucks would hit... You can find me on Google+ and Twitter.
