When people think of Las Vegas, a Rolodex of Sin City icons flips through their minds like the images on an old-school slot machine. From images of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra to Lady Luck and the sounds of coins hitting the metal collection plate after a jackpot pull, Vegas has amassed more accurate stereotypical traits over the years than a sorority girl on spring break. However, one of the icons that has been painted into the imagined mural of Las Vegas is the long-legged, luscious-locked, soft-skinned showgirl that knows just what to do to catch the eyes of every onlooker who crosses her path.
We recently bid adieu to “Jubilee,” which played in Las Vegas for more than 30 years, making it the longest running showgirl show in town, and it really got us thinking about one thing: Where in this city will we be able to get our showgirl fix when the hankering comes a-knocking?
Well, just take Elvis for an example…. When something great hits this town, in one way or another, it will find a way to stick around. With that considered, we know that in one form or another we will hold onto our beloved showgirls and to save you some effort, we have picked out a few places where you can still get in your showgirl fix.
Vegas! The Show
In this high-energy musical show, the Entertainment Capital of the World is portrayed through the wandering memories of the show’s narrator, Ernie; the handyman of Las Vegas’ Neon Museum. During his trip down memory lane, Ernie recounts Vegas’ Rat Pack era with musical numbers that pay homage to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and, of course, the beautiful showgirls. Decorating nearly every scene with their tasteful yet sensual dance moves and dazzling costumes, “Vegas! The Show”is one of our go-tos when we are craving some classic Vegas.
Steve Wynn’s Showstoppers
If traditional Vegas showgirls are your thing, then get ready to have your mind blown with “Steve Wynn’s Showstoppers” at Wynn Las Vegas. Pulling out all of the stops on costumes and talent, this production embodies every element that makes up the allure of a showgirl: dazzling costumes, radiant women and a grandiose set that does nothing short of razzling the audience. Packed with multiple hit numbers of some of Broadway’s biggest successes, not only is this show entertaining, it’s got all that you need to satiate that showgirl craving of yours.
Want to spot a Vegas showgirl but don’t want to foot the bill for a show? Well, Las Vegas’ former mayor Oscar Goodman is known for making public appearances with beautiful showgirls by his side and a martini in hand. Yep, that’s right. Be it at a town hall meeting, a ribbon cutting ceremony or a night on the town, Mayor Goodman is always surrounded by the iconic Sin City beauties. Hey, the man knows what he wants and thanks to him, we know where to snag our showgirl fix when we are in a pinch.
Hanging out on the Strip for tips
Another way to catch a glimpse of and maybe even score a photo with a showgirl is by cruising Las Vegas Boulevard. Sure, the girls that you encounter on the Strip aren’t typically the trained dancers that you get in the shows, they are still beautiful women in sparkling, barely-there costumes that will pose for a photo with you for proof that you were actually in Vegas. Of course, these photos require you to tip the ladies for their time but hey, just like the guy in the photo below, you too can have your very own Las Vegas showgirl photo as a souvenir of your trip.
J. Lo’s “All of Me” concert
Jenny from the block had us fooled when she doubled as Jenny from the Strip during her ode to Las Vegas showgirl number. Belting out a pitch-perfect rendition of “A Lot Of Livin’ To Do,” the singing sensation seems to have taken a course in showgirl showmanship considering that she nails the showgirl staircase walk, is carried across the stage in true showgirl fashion by her male backup dancers and is flaunting a feather-licious cape and a rhinestoned bikini that would make the Milky Way blush. Yeah, we definitely got in our showgirl fix in when we checked out J. Lo in her “All of Me” concert.
And now, for all of you thrill seekers and/or shy ones out there, if you don’t actually feel like making contact with a real life showgirl or you are interested in getting a showgirl and adrenaline fix, head downtown to the Fremont Street Experience. Yes, you may encounter some counterfeit showgirls parading the streets, but allow us to direct your attention to the Slotzilla Zipline whose exterior greets onlookers with illuminated showgirl décor. Vegas Vic down the street probably already has his eyes on these sexy signs but hey, here in Vegas we are all about sharing so go on and take a gander, you have our permission.
