Ten bars not to miss in downtown Las Vegas

The vibrancy of downtown Las Vegas has been growing steadily. The Downtown & 3rd Farmer’s Market allows people to get artisanal foods and fresh produce every Friday morning. Restaurants like Le Thai have been popping up here and there. The freestanding bars and lounges opening downtown make nightlife and barhopping fun and easy.

These bars take on a life and personality of their own. From a lounge / arcade hybrid, to a retro bar, complete with ’50s-style hair dryers, these quirky hangouts breathe life into downtown Las Vegas.

Here is a list of 10 bars not to miss when you’re downtown:

Mob Bar

Location: 240 N. 3rd St., Las Vegas, NV 89101

Description: Mob Bar is the casual, comfortable bar with an old-school feel mixed with modern conveniences (note the multiple flat-screen televisions.) The bar brings you back to the Roaring ’20s, complete with Prohibition cocktail menu. When you’re at Mob Bar, act like you’re in the know and order “The Usual,” Mob Bar’s signature cocktail, made with Woodford reserve bourbon, Cherry Heering, bitters and a splash of vermouth.

Hogs & Heifers Saloon

Location: 201 N. 3rd St., Las Vegas, NV 89101

The original New York location in the Meat Packing District is said to be the inspiration for “Coyote Ugly,” so you can only imagine the party that happens in Vegas. The bartenders are delightfully crude. The interior looks like a dive bar, complete with bumper stickers on the walls. Oh, and there are lots and lots of bras hanging from the ceiling.

Don’t Tell Mama

Location:517 Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV 89101

Description: Don’t Tell Mama is a piano bar located in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. The bar offers live entertainment, nightly. However, if you’re so inclined, take a turn on the mic and belt out your best Billy Joel or Bon Jovi rock ballad.

Location: 516 Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV 89101

Description: Vanguard Lounge is a sleek, sophisticated bar, mixed with an urban edge. The front is a garage door that opens to a small patio and leads you into the main room. Once inside, white crocodile-embossed booths and barstools lead to a long bar area, where exotic craft cocktails are offered, like the “Fig-ure of Speech,” a mixture of maplewood bacon-infused bourbon and housemade blackberry fig jam.

Location: 511 Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV 89101

Description: With dark woods, deep colors and a fireplace, The Griffin takes you out of downtown Las Vegas and into someone’s living room — with a jukebox and a bar.

Insert Coins

Location: 512 Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV 89101

Description: Insert Coins is a 7,000-square-foot venue that features a small dance floor, a DJ booth, Pacman. . .About that last part — Insert Coins is part bar, part club, part arcade. That’s right, you can essentially sip a cocktail while playing “Call of Duty.” Or, do a little dancing and then sink into a VIP booth (equipped with HDTVs, of course) and order bottle service while playing your Xbox 360. Ah, it’s good to be a gamer.

Lady Silvia
