Just a short drive from Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam is a tried and true national treasure attracting more than one million visitors a year.
Named one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century and a National Historic Landmark, the Hoover Dam also makes a great backdrop for movies, television shows and commercials.
“The dam represents lasting strength combined with beautiful artistic touches,” said Bureau of Reclamation spokesperson Rose Davis. “That really draws people.”
Here are what we at VEGAS.com consider four of the best dam cameos in film:
Best Dam Destruction and Reconstruction – Superman (1978)
Superman makes a fatal choice by saving Jimmy Olsen from impending splatdom on a quickly collapsing Hoover Dam as Lois Lane is buried alive in her car. His love for Lois so true, Superman turns back time by flying fast enough around the earth backwards (which is apparently a thing) thus saving Lois. In the clip below, we see the broken dam miraculously become unbroken:
Best Dam Secret Hideout for a Giant Robot Cube – Transformers (2007)
Having all toured the inside of the Hoover Dam, we can say with somewhat certainty that the AllSpark isn’t down there.
While the dam is one of the largest hydroelectric power facilities in the country and it is responsible for generating power for California, Arizona and Nevada, it is not responsible (as far as we know) for creating and sustaining life for the Transformers.
If you decide to check out the dam, you won’t run into any power hungry Decepticons. Probably.
Best Gratuitous (and Possibly Most Offensive) Use of the Word “Dam” – Beavis and Butthead Do America (1996)
Ummmmm, just watch:
Best Dam Patch Job – Vegas Vacation (1997)
Swallow it, it stays in your stomach for the rest of your life. Break holes in the Hoover Dam, and it’s the best way to patch things up. That’s why the Hoover Dam Gift Shop sells so many different brands of gum. We suggest the Double Bubble.
Note: None of the above dam statements are true.
