The only thing missing was a giant shaker of salt. Containing 2,125 gallons of Margaritaville gold tequila, 708 gallons of Margaritaville triple sec, 5,667 gallons of margarita mix and 22,267 limes, the world’s largest margarita had the rest of its bases covered. Even Jimmy Buffet was there to make a surprise appearance and raise a glass in celebration of the record-breaking drink branded Lucky Rita.
The larger-than-life libation was unveiled on Friday, Oct. 14 at 5 o’clock to celebrate the opening of Margaritaville Casino at the Flamingo. More than 1,000 onlookers and Parrotheads decked out in tropical gear and colorful hats gathered in the alley between Margaritaville Casino and O’Sheas to welcome the 8,500-gallon concoction. A representative from the Guinness World Records was on hand to announce and verify that Lucky Rita was indeed the largest margarita in the world. It took the creators about six months of planning and about 300 work hours to make Lucky Rita.
The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team was also at the ceremony. Lucky Rita is now available for purchase to the public and for every gallon sold, Margaritaville will donate $5 to the Wounded Warrior Softball Team.
Buffet’s surprise appearance helped get fans amped for his show the following evening on Oct. 15. He has another show Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. at the MGM Grand. Starting at 11 a.m. on Oct. 22, the alley between Margaritaville Casino and O’Sheas will transform into a street party with free live entertainment, interactive games, food and drink specials and various giveaways including Margaritaville sunglasses, flip flops, frozen concoction makers and even concert tickets to Buffet’s show that evening. At the street party, guests will also have the opportunity to purchase some of Lucky Rita and taste the largest margarita in the world. Big enough for about 181,333 12-ounce margaritas, there’s plenty of this drink to go around.
After you’re done partying on the street make sure to head inside to check out the new Margaritaville Casino. Located next to Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville restaurant, the casino features 22 gaming tables, 220 slot machines and a 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar… all themed with Buffet’s laid-back tropical island vibe. Fins up!
