Vegas Weekender: Vegas summer is heating up

Whether you’re here for a chick trip, an all-guy’s weekend or just coming here simply for a fun getaway, Vegas has something going on for every occasion. With some of the biggest names in music and comedy performing around town this weekend, to the hottest nightlife and dining options, Vegas is ready to make sure you have a good time.

Headliners

The biggest problem you’ll have this weekend is figuring out which show you really want to see. With so many concerts going on, you might just have to flip a coin.

Rock music fans can take their pick of a number of different shows. On Friday, July 16, Corey Taylor of Slipknot with special guest The Junk Beer Kidnap Band rock the house during Rogue’s Friday Night Live at the Hard Rock’s pool.

Over at Planet Hollywood on July 16, Tool rocks audiences with all of their hit songs.

Rock band Thrice hits the stage at House of Blues July 18.

The Hard Rock keeps the music going this weekend at The Joint: Friday, July 16 catch Silversun Pickups with Against Me! and The Henry Clay People. See Espinoza Paz on Saturday, July 17. Also at the Hard Rock, MXPX and Sprockets perform at Wasted Space on Sunday, July 18.

If you’re coming here with your girlfriends, get dolled up and see mega-pop stars Rihanna and Ke$ha perform live at Mandalay Bay on Saturday, July 17 at 8 p.m.

For a little old school music, check out James Darren at 7:30 p.m. July 16 – 17 at the South Point.

Modern English brings you back to the ’80s July 17 at the Red Rock Resort Casino.

Carole King and James Taylor sing their classic hits July 17 at the MGM Grand.

If it’s country music you’re craving, head over to the Silverton for Little Big Town on July 17.

Maybe you want to enjoy the pool with your music. At Mandalay Bay’s Concerts at the Beach, see Gipsy Kings on Friday, July 16, or enjoy the reggae sounds of Ziggy Marley on Saturday, July 17.

Ready to laugh and cry your eyes out? Then make sure to check out Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club at the Tropicana through Sunday, July 18. Special guests include Rondell Sheridan and Jennifer Kober.

Bill Maher brings his “politically incorrect” brand of comedy to the Orleans July 17 – 18 at 8 p.m.

If you find yourself staying up late on weeknights just to watch his TV show, see Jay Leno live bringing his jokes to the stage inside the Mirage on Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17 at 10 p.m.

The comedy continues with “Hanging With Mr. Cooper” star Mark Curry at the Las Vegas Hilton on Wednesday, July 21.

Shows

Get ready to get your dive on. Enjoy the summer by taking a dip in a unique scuba diving experience with Wynn Las Vegas’ Diver’s Dream Package. During this experience, you’ll get to dive during a live performance of the aquatic show, “Le Reve.”

In addition to the diving experience, you’ll get to have a private backstage tour of “Le Reve,” as well as an scuba training session with the Le Reve diving team.

Nightlife

Ready to party? Check out Flo Rida performing July 15 at 9 p.m. at the Palms Pools & Bungalows. Guests who purchase VIP tickets get a special viewing area and a complimentary Cruzan cocktail.

You can also catch a live performance from DJ Steve Aoki July 16 as he presents “Aoki House” at Surrender Nightclub inside Encore.

There’s a new bar in town. The Queen Victoria Pub is an authentic British-owned and operated pub inside the Riviera Hotel. The pub features European and British sports, all your favorite pints and ciders and an English-style menu.

Sports

The basketball season may have just ended, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. The 2010 NBA Summer League plays through Sunday, July 18. See 2010 NBA champions Los Angeles Lakers and a team of NBA Development League select players, compete at the Thomas & Mack Center and the COX Pavilion at the UNLV campus. This year’s event also features the Washington Wizards, who selected John Wall with the first overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. Other top five selections in this year’s draft expected to participate include Wesley Johnson and DeMarcus Cousins.

Dining

If you want to try one of the newest restaurants in Vegas, head over to Harrah’s to celebrity Chef Kerry Simon’s, KGB: Kerry’s Gourmet Burgers. The restaurant features some inventive burger offerings, signature snacks and sides including “Iron Chef” sliders and tater tots and desserts such as strawberry shortcake push pops. KGB’s full service bar offers a wide array of vodkas and customers can utilize the ice bar feature for the perfectly chilled drink. A vodka hostess will engage patrons throughout the evening, pairing burger selections with the ideal vodka cocktail.
