Vegas Weekender: Make mom’s day memorable in Vegas

Sigh. So many parties, so little time. What’s a vacationer to do?
Vegas has something going on for everyone no matter what you enjoy doing. It’s also Mother’s Day on Sunday and we have plenty of options for ways to spoil mom, from a trip
to the spa to a shopping spree or a pool party.

Lance Burton dazzles Vegas audiences at the Monte Carlo with sleight-of-hand tricks and amazing magic that has earned him international acclaim. Also performing at Mirage this weekend is Jay Leno, May 14-15 at 10 p.m.

The cast members of Disney’s The Lion King will surely remind you of your younger years. Plus, the storyline never gets old. Who can ever get enough of Simba and the gang?

Watch The Lion King at Mandalay Bay Monday – Thursday at 7:30 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

While you’re at Mandalay Bay, you can check out Thrice and Manchester Orchestra on Friday,
May 7 at House of Blues.

Other headlining acts include hip-hop dancing sensation Jabbawockeez at MGM Grand (9 p.m. through May 26 ), MAXXIS MiniMotoSX
at Orleans (May 7 at 8 p.m.), The Four Tops at Orleans (May 7-8 at 8 p.m.), Flyleaf at Hard Rock Hotel (May 7 at 7 p.m.), New Kids on the Block at The Palms (May 7-8 at 8 p.m.) and Gabriel Iglesias at Buffalo Bill’s (May 8 at 8 p.m.).

The annual food and wine festival Vegas Uncork’d hits the Strip this weekend, bringing celebrity-chef-hosted events, amazing meals, wine tastings, culinary talks and more. 

During the four-day event, there are Masters’ Series dinners with noted chefs and “Bon Appétit” staffers like Editor-in-Chief Barbara Fairchild and Features Editor Hugh Garvey. There are also lectures and lunches where you can schmooze with your favorite chef. There is also a Grand Tasting, where restaurants from many Vegas properties will give tastings of their best and brightest dishes.

The event culminates in the Grand Tasting takes place at the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis at Caesars Palace, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

The party starts at 8 p.m. The $20 cover charge includes a choice of two signature cocktails or a $20 wine card, which can be used in one of 12 wine dispensing systems with more than 160 wines by the glass. The party stays jumping with a live DJ spinning dance club hits.

If shopping’s more your bag, donate your denim and save money when you shop at Wynn and Encore. Through May 10, bring in up to three pairs of gently used denim jeans (any brand, style or size) and receive 20 percent off your entire purchase at each of these stores: Rock & Republic at Encore, Ensemble at Encore and Mojito’s at Wynn. Your donated denim will be recycled into insulation to help rebuild communities in need.

While we have you in the shopping mood, visit the Fashion Show mall Friday, May 7 at 6 p.m. See all 51 of the 2010 Miss USA contestants (including Miss Puerto Rico) walk in
a special runway show. The event will be held at the Great Hall, just across from California Pizza Kitchen.

Pool parties to beat the heat

Tao Beach at the Venetian is ready to make it hot this summer. With new renovations, the party just got better.

Upgrades include a DJ booth right in the center of the action, as well as five new exclusive cabanas. Tasty options include lemon and ginger edamame, grilled tuna sashimi and cocktails like Lemongrass Cooler and Geisha Girl.

Make sure to visit on Sundays when Tao Beach hosts “Beatport Beach Party,” an explosive electronic dance festival. This Sunday, May 9, features guest DJ Vanjee.

The popular Ditch Fridays returns to the Palms Pool & Bungalows, but sun worshippers can also enjoy Sun Dance on Sundays, featuring the sounds by resident DJ Scotty Boy.

P.U.B. spells F-U-N

Plan on staying for a long weekend? Enjoy “Nickel Beer Night” at Todd English’s P.U.B. inside Crystals at CityCenter. Every Tuesday night from 9 p.m. – midnight, guests can purchase 8-ounce cups of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer for only five cents each.

This promotion is available for guests seated at the bar, in the main dining room or on the patio. If you’re dining in the main room or patio, a $12 food mininum is required. There is no food minimum when seated at the bar.
