Vegas Weekender: Beat the summer blues in Vegas

The end of summer is approaching quickly and this could be one of the last weekends you’ll have before school starts and you have to return to reality. So, while the weather is still pool-worthy and you don’t have to carpool and help with homework just yet, come spend a weekend in Vegas.

The Ultimate B-Boy Championship dances its way to Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena August 6 – 7. Some of the best break dancers in the world get to compete for more than $80,000 and the UBC title. Eight dance crews will perform and be judged on their dancing abilities. There is also a special appearance scheduled by the Jabbawockeez, “America’s Best Dance Crew” winners. Show times are 8 p.m. both days and tickets start at $45. 

Even though it’s taking place in Oakland, Calif., you can watch the big fight at Lagasse’s Stadium, where seeing UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen on the big screen will be like sitting ringside – only you can have Lagasse’s signature steak Bam’wich while lounging on a couch. The viewing party is Aug. 7 at 7 p.m.

There is also a viewing party for the big UFC 117 fight at Crown Nightclub at the Rio, Aug. 7 from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 or $50 for an open bar.

If you’re a fan of the ’80s and ’90s, head to Crown to see the Spazmatics perform Friday, Aug. 6. This Friday, Miss Nevada Christina Keegan guest hosts for what is sure to be a great show. Admission for non-locals is $10 for ladies and $20 for men. Additionally, there’s an all-you-can-drink option from 9 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. for $35. Doors open at 9 p.m. for this event.

Be amazed as artists pay tribute to Madonna, James Brown, Garth Brooks and more in “Legends in Concert” at Harrah’s. This family-friendly show displays the talent of the tribute artists, not just in looks, but also in sound. Each artist brings to life the celebrity they are portraying. Show times are Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. On Saturday, show time is 6:30 p.m. Tickets start at $48 per person.

With a smooth voice and memorable stage presence, singing star Tom Jones lights up the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand Aug. 5 – 8. Tickets start at $92.40 and show time is 7:30 p.m.
Dropkick Murphys entertain audiences with their unique brand of Celtic punk at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel at 8 p.m. Aug. 6. Tickets are priced from $28.50.

Country music favorite Pat Green plays in the intimate Rocks Lounge at Red Rock Resort Casino, Resort and Spa Aug. 7. Show time is 10 p.m. and tickets start at $20.

Enjoy mouth-watering cuisine from five James Beard Award winners and many others at the third annual Carnival of Cuisine in the Venetian. On Saturday, Aug. 7, the Venetian Ballroom will transform into a culinary haven with restaurants and super chefs like CUT from Wolfgang Puck; Lagasse’s Stadium and Table 10 from Emeril Lagasse; and Bouchon from Thomas Keller participating.

Tickets are $50 or $75 for VIP admission and the event starts at 1 p.m. or noon for VIPs. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

If you’re a beer fan, Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas has the perfect contest for you. Take part in a stein holding contest where your love of beer is tested. Contestants will stand in a line and hold a 1 liter stein (about five pounds) until there’s only one person left standing. The winner with the best overall time wins a trip to New York for the second annual stein-holding U.S. championship. This weekend, the contest is Friday and Saturday, Aug. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas is located at 4510 Paradise Rd., across from the Hard Rock Hotel. Good luck!

Join Project Dinner Table as they take you on a culinary adventure with Chef Jeff Braun and Pastry Chef Everett William of the Mirage. On Aug. 7, the Emergency Arts Building and the El Cortez walkway will transform into a dining room with culinary delights made from fresh, locally grown ingredients. Tickets are $125 and the dinner starts at 7 p.m.

Your luck starts the date you arrive in Vegas. If you’re coming to town Aug. 5, that is.
El Segundo Sol is making a point of celebrating Cinco de Mayo on the fifth of every month, starting with Cinco de Agosto, or the fifth of August. The festivities include great specials that are budget-friendly like $2.95 beers and select tequila shots.

El Segundo Sol is located at the Fashion Show Mall, facing the Las Vegas Strip.
