Today, media and other invited guests got a sneak peek of Cirque du Soleil’s much anticipated show “Viva Elvis.” The press conference and preview were part of the events leading up to the grand opening of Aria Resort & Casino on Dec. 16.
“I think Elvis would be very pleased to know that he’s back in Vegas again in the way that he should be presented,” said Priscilla Presley at the press conference.
Some of the songs included in the preview were “Blue Suede Shoes,” “All Shook Up” and “Loving You (Got a Lotta Living to Do).” Each act portrayed Cirque’s interpretation of the King conveyed through singers, dancers, gymnasts, acrobats and a live band. Guests had a chance to see some incredible performers and exclusive footage of Elvis displayed on large screens that acted as a backdrop for the show.
Alan Feldman, senior vice president of public affairs for MGM Mirage; Robert F.X. Sillerman, chairman and CEO of CKX, Inc. the parent company of Elvis Presley Enterprises; Guy Laliberté, artistic director and founder of Cirque du Soleil and Vincent Paterson, writer and director for “Viva Elvis” were also present at the conference.
“Unfortunately some people think that Elvis passed away … his performance career in Las Vegas ended until tomorrow. Elvis is back home where Elvis Presley really belongs,” said Sillerman.
He explained that not only is the show both a memorial to Elvis and an educational piece about him but it’s also, “a look at the future of what this wonderful talent has to offer.”
“What we’re all participating in… is in fact merely a continuation of the man who really started big entertainment in Las Vegas,” said Sillerman.
Preview performances for the show start Dec. 18. The show will officially open on Feb. 19.
