UPDATE — 3:25 p.m.: Safety testing has officially begun on El Loco’s cars, a major milestone in the coaster construction process:

It’s almost time to go crazy on the Las Vegas Strip! The El Loco roller coaster is slated to open at the Adventuredome at Circus Circus in late January or early February — and I’m pretty much giddy with excitement.

As of this morning the 1,300-foot track appears to be complete and workers are now installing the open-carriage cars, which are not running yet.

In the meantime, roller coaster enthusiasts can enter the Adventuredome’s contest to be among the first to ride the crazy coaster. Plus, Las Vegas is home to an array of other super cool thrills, including roller coasters, a controlled free fall, indoor skydiving and race cars.

The photos below were taken at the Adventuredome today by Jennifer Whitehair (except for the last photo, which is a courtesy rendering of the completed coaster):

Of course, I don’t want to make Las Vegas’ other roller coasters feel neglected by the new kid in town. So here’s a look at Desperado, the Roller Coaster at New York-New York (a.k.a. The Big Apple Coaster) and Canyon Blaster:

Yes, I’m from Las Vegas. But I’d like to clarify a few things: I don’t live in a hotel and I’m not a showgirl. I put my pasties on one nipple at a time, just like everyone else. I’m a regular girl who plunges off the side of ridiculously tall Las Vegas landmarks and writes about it for a living. I also ride roller coasters, hang at the spa, shoot holes in zombies and take art lessons from bottlenose dolphins. You know, normal stuff. My career as a journalist and copywriter has led me out of Vegas and around the world, but the 24/7 normality of Las Vegas sucks me back in every time. Am I oblivious to the plethora of slot machines everywhere I go? Sure. But that’s because I’m distracted by all the pretty lights. Follow me on Google+ and Twitter.
