Paint with the dolphins on your next Vegas adventure

It’s not every day you get to see dolphins, and Las Vegas would be one of the last places you’d expect them. Not only do you get to see dolphins at The Mirage’s Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, but you can also help bring out their artistic talents.

Not only will you assist a dolphin during a painting session, but you'll also have time to admire these marvelous creatures splashing about at Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat.

Dolphins make a splash on canvas with the program “Painting with the Dolphins.” During this hands-on experience, you’ll collaborate with dolphins and make an artistic masterpiece. This interactive program allows you to connect with these lovable creatures. In addition, this creates an enriching environment for them.

“Our primary goal is to ensure the highest quality of care, which includes high levels of physical and mental stimulation for the animals each and every day,” said Philip Admire, curator of dolphin care at The Mirage. “Our ‘Painting with the Dolphins’ program creates another avenue to mentally challenge and engage our dolphins with their trainers while providing guests with an unforgettable experience.”

After a brief orientation, observe the dolphins up close while learning about their health and behavior. Following an overview of the painting process, choose the background color for your canvas (or leave it white for higher contrast). You’ll then select three paint colors from a vibrant palette. The trainer dips a brush into the first color, and then lets the dolphin begin painting. The paintbrushes are placed inside buoys (shaped like chunky light bulbs) so the dolphins can hold them safely in their mouths.

Since each dolphin has their own method painting, no two canvases are alike. Once the painting dries, you’ll get to take it with you, along with a certificate of authenticity and a souvenir photo.

“Painting with the Dolphins” is available twice daily at noon and 3 p.m. and is limited to two participants per session. The program is open to guests ages 8 and older. Tickets are $199 per person. If you want to do the “Trainer for a Day” program, you can add the “Painting with the Dolphins” session for an additional $100.

Can’t get enough of the dolphins? The Spa at The Mirage offers a one-of-a-kind experience, “Yoga Among the Dolphins.” Your session takes place in an underwater viewing area within Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. Practice your moves while watching the dolphins swim. This class is open to the public and suitable for all fitness levels. The cost is $50 per person. It’s held Friday – Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

Most folks take their Vegas jackpot winnings back home, but my dad decided to stay here instead. That’s how I left Seattle almost 20 years ago. I moved from greenery and rainy days to hot summers, palm trees and desert. As much as I love my hometown, I decided to stick around Vegas. This city just has so much to offer. You don’t even have to be a gambler, bar hopper or an all-night partier. I love Vegas for its awesome vegan-friendly spots, concerts, swanky hotel suites and spas so big, they’re like castles. The pool scene is not too shabby either, which is why I love taking stay-cations. Besides living it up -- Vegas style -- I’m hanging out with my adorable baby girl, two cats and super-fluffy Shih-Tzu. I’m also a huge fan of '90s music, shows and movies.
