The roller coaster gods have chosen August 16 as National Roller Coaster Day. Well, actually, I read online that this date was chosen because it marks the first patent for a looping roller coaster in the late 1800s. But I consider roller coaster rides a spiritual experience, so I prefer to think of it as a religious holiday like Yom Kippur or Festivus.

Incidentally, August 16 is also the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death (and the end of his roller coaster diet and drug problems).

Desperado, baby!

Anyway, Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino is totally on the same page as me when it comes to the importance of observing this life-altering holiday. So in honor of National Roller Coaster Day on August 16, the Primm hotel is offering free rides on the Desperado roller coaster from 12:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

One of the fastest roller coasters in the world (and formerly the tallest), Desperado will blow your mind (and possibly even rattle your brain — this roller coaster ride is bumpy!). Riders climb upwards of 255 feet into the air before plummeting through a tunnel at 90 miles per hour. To say this ride is not for the faint of heart is an understatement.

If you haven’t ridden the Desperado you must give it a try. Unless, of course, you hate fun and excitement. You don’t hate fun and excitement, do you?

Here is a behind-the scenes video of this awesome roller coaster, as well as the Roller Coaster at New York New York and the Canyon Blaster at Adventuredome:

Yes, I’m from Las Vegas. But I’d like to clarify a few things: I don’t live in a hotel and I’m not a showgirl. I put my pasties on one nipple at a time, just like everyone else. I’m a regular girl who plunges off the side of ridiculously tall Las Vegas landmarks and writes about it for a living. I also ride roller coasters, hang at the spa, shoot holes in zombies and take art lessons from bottlenose dolphins. You know, normal stuff. My career as a journalist and copywriter has led me out of Vegas and around the world, but the 24/7 normality of Las Vegas sucks me back in every time. Am I oblivious to the plethora of slot machines everywhere I go? Sure. But that’s because I’m distracted by all the pretty lights. Follow me on Google+ and Twitter.
